Statistics & Commentary
Investment Manager’s Commentary – July 2022
Markets rallied in July led by a strong rebound in growth stocks. Although the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 75 bps, Chairman Powell’s comments indicating moderating rate hikes moving forward spurred a strong relief rally for longer-duration assets. Inflation continued to climb with the U.S. consumer price index increasing 9.1% in June, the highest rate in four decades. U.S. GDP declined 0.9% in Q2, the second quarterly decline in a row, dragged down by housing and inventories while consumer spending slowed but remained positive. U.S. markets performed best during the month while Emerging Markets lagged driven by weakness in Chinese stocks and continued headwinds from a strengthening U.S. dollar.
